Georgia’s most well-known example of land surveying turned into the Georgia Land Lotteries. Land surveyors had been called in to measure and regulate the parcels of land to be sold off using a lottery. Each time the land of the Creek and Cherokee humans was ceded to the country, the land needed to be surveyed before being disbursed via lottery.

In 1802, at Fort Wilkinson, strips of land had been ceded by the Creek tribe, one in the Southeast corner of gift-day Georgia and one just west of the Oconee River. The Land Lottery Act of May 1803 set out the system for the lottery. Three counties were created, with varying districts inside those counties: 5 in Stanley Baldwin County, three in Wayne County, and five in Wilkinson County.

For every one of the 13 districts, one surveyor becomes employed to map and phase the land into masses. Each surveyor becomes paid $2.75 according to the mile, which needed to consist of all incidental expenses, including field awareness of books and salaries for everybody they employed to help them. Once the district survey is turned into a whole, the surveyor might provide his information to the Georgia Surveyor General. The overall lots surveyed for the first Land Lottery became 4,580 complete lots. Any fractional lots or islands much less than one hundred acres have been held out of the 1805 auction and offered at public auction in 1806.

The surveys for the primary Land Lottery set a precedent for how the relaxation of the counties in Georgia would be assessed and divided. Each of the districts changed into subdivided into numbered land plenty; each one might begin and proceed in numerical order. This interest in element and exactness has prompted some confusion; until you pay unique interest to which district you’re looking at on a map, you can misread it because the communities are all so similar. Many run almost parallel to each other. These districts and lots are in use to this day. Many of the United States of America lines have shifted and changed over time. However, the original survey of plenty is no longer. Nevertheless, properties in Georgia are diagnosed via land lot number, land district variety, and county; sometimes, the authentic county name is indexed properly.

The first five Land Lotteries (1805, 1807, 1820, 1821, and 1827) redistributed the Creek lands that had been ceded to the kingdom in a few instances forcibly. By the 1827 Land Lottery’s give up, all Creek lands in Georgia had been taken far away from them. The 6th and 7th Land Lotteries (each in 1832) gave away the land of the Cherokee Nation. Their pressured exodus would be termed the “Trail of Tears”. The 2d 1832 Land Lottery also gave away land used during the Georgia Gold Rush, even though the authorities no longer guaranteed any gold left at the lots. The very last Land Lottery was held in December 1833. It dispensed lots and fractions now not located throughout either of the 1832 lotteries.

Over an insignificant 24 years, most of present-day Georgia’s land changed into ceded, surveyed, and redistributed in masses with assets boundaries that stand even today.
